With a long standing tradition of medicinal use in Japan, Haskap berries have strong medicinal properties and are grown wild and cultivated right here in Canada. Haskap is a deciduous shrub reaching 1 – 2 m tall, which produces dark blue to almost purple oblong berries approximately 1 cm in length.
Unlike blueberries, Haskap berries' flesh is also purple, making it 5 times more potent in polyphenols than blueberries. And they taste great! With a fruity tangy zing, they taste like a cross between a raspberry, blueberry and black currant.
Sweet Prairie Haskap is our family orchard located near Melfort, Saskatchewan.
We are a local food producing family that is innovating by taking on the new Super Fruit, developed at the University of Saskatchewan.
We are excited to be working with a fruit crop that is uniquely suited to our short summers and harsh winters. What we found is that our harsh winter climate actually produces a healthier Haskap berry.
Although we are delighted with the unique taste of Haskap, the health properties of the entire Haskap plant have exceeded our best expectations.
Researchers across Canada are finding Nutraceutical test results that prove Haskap is one of the healthiest fruits and plants, in the world.
Our family decided to focus on these natural health benefits, and we have developed our new health food line of products right here in Saskatchewan.
